Georgian Bay and the North Channel …. Our War of 1812 voyage to Drummond Island, Michigan

Posted on July 28, 2012

We’d hoped to get to Mackinac but the weather and the waves were ‘not permitting’ for our small boat !!! Our cottage is here in Penetang. We’ve always learned that it was populated by ‘Drummond Islanders’….. Canadians that came ‘home’ to Canada after the Treaty of Ghent drew Drummmond Island outside Canada after the War of 1812….. they came here to settle … We left here Sunday to stay with friends in the Shawanaga Inlet and then on to the wonderful Killarney Mountain Lodge via the spectacular Beaverstone Bay and the Collins Inlet …www.killarney.com….. next morning we headed off to Drummond Island ….but the wind and the waves … had us tuck into Meldrum Bay… and the fabulous Meldrum Bay Inn …We’d had a reservation there for Thursday night…. but the waves and the wind made it clear we weren’t getting to Drummond Island on Tuesday night….It ended up a true bonus … TWO nights at meldrumbayinn.com on Manitoulin Island with the amazing hospitality of Shirin and her daugher Elena…. Wednesday night we were thriled to reach the Summmit of our journey – Drummond Island … and to find our friends and fellow travellers- the McNamara’s- relatives enshrined in the local museum…. our fancy clothes to meet the dress code at the Grand Hotel at Mackinac remained on board …. we were thrilled to get a rain cheque for next year….and totally reconciled that Drummond Island was truly our 1812 goal! Thursday we headed back to the fabulous Meldrum Bay Inn, Friday stopped for a delicious lunch stop at the Buoy Eatery in Gore Bay to wait out the nasty NE wind… then back to our ‘holy grail’ Killarney Mountain Lodge…. today we headed back to Thunder Bay Beach… with a truly memorable lunch at The Westerns…. am having trouble uploading the pics…. But will do so asap….
