Report: Aboriginal Food Security in Northern Canada

Posted on March 27, 2014

The Council of Canadian Academies new report  confirms what we already learned last year from the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, a host of other studies and Aboriginal people in Northern Canada who are hungry. Food insecurity is a serious and growing problem in Canada’s northern and remote Aboriginal communities.

In a country as prosperous as Canada, people should have a basic right to adequate food. Canada must take food sovereignty seriously and put individuals who produce, distribute and consume food at the center of decisions on food systems and policies.

The Council of Canadian Academies report was prepared in response to a request from the federal Minister of Health and the federal government can no longer ignore this urgent issue. We eagerly look forward to the Conservative government’s response.

The figure below lays out well the factors affecting food security in the North.
