St. Paul’s is Changing: Federal Electoral District Redistribution

Posted on September 27, 2012

Have your say!

Deadline is Oct. 1st, 2012

You may have heard that this riding of St. Paul’s is going to be affected by the Federal Electoral District Redistribution. What is this and what does it mean for this area?

Canada’s Constitution requires that all ridings be reviewed every ten years following the collection of census data, in order to accommodate changes in Canada’s population. Every riding across the country is examined and evaluated by an independent commission. In Ontario, 15 new ridings are being created by this process so that each riding will have an equal number of people: 111,166. There are opportunities for Canadians to have their say and support or file complaints about the changes to their own electoral districts at public hearings taking place across the country.

In St. Paul’s, the eastern half of the riding will be merged with sections from surrounding ridings to form a new district: Mount Pleasant, which will incorporate the neighborhoods of Davisville, Chaplin Estates, Mount Pleasant, Deer Park, Summerhill, Moore Park, and Rosedale. On the western side of the riding, a sliver of Davenport will be included as will the northernmost section of Trinity-Spadina.

The revised boundaries of St. Paul’s will still include Forest Hill, South Hill, Cedarvale, Casa Loma, Oakwood, Fairbanks, Humewood, Wychwood and Davenport, but portions of Yorkville, the Annex, Mirvish Village, Christie Pitts, Bloordale, and Bloorcourt will also be added. These changes split up some of our local BIA’s and natural neighborhoods. We have already heard from many people who believe that the eastern boundary would make more sense at Yonge Street.

To make a presentation at one of the public hearings, you must declare your intent by October 1st, 2012. You can submit your notice via the Public Hearings Notice Form (http://goo.gl/ghYqe), or via email to Ontario@rfed-rcf.ca or to the Commission’s mailing address at: Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario 130 King Street West, 36th Floor, Suite 3670, P.O. Box 368, Toronto, Ontario M5X 2A2.

We want to know how YOU feel about the proposed changes and what, if any impacts you feel it might have on your community or business in St. Paul’s. Please answer our short survey so we can best represent your interests. All information is for our use only and no names will be used or sold.
