We made our point…and now have on record…. each amendment that we voted on pointed out that this government only pretended to consult… it didn’t listen… it is truly appalling the government boasts about the hours of debate and committee hearings … but obviously did not hear one thing that was said…. unbelievably after all the experts and stakeholders that testified, all the Parliamentarians that contributed to the debate… all the Conservative members who now face the serious problems this budget has created in their ridings….that they were unable to speak out about… The Stephen Harper ‘Fear Factory’ has silenced them all….. and tabled not ONE single government amendment… their budget implementation Bill was to their minds ‘perfect’ …. the Parliamentary process irrelevant…. as so many have said … tonight was the death of a Parliamentary Democracy….. the perceived ‘mandate’ of this majority has totally ignored the views of the 60% of Cdns that didn’t vote for them… and indeed the needs of so many Conservative ridings – from the 4 ridings on the Trent-Severn devastated by the cuts to Parks Canada, to the ridings in Atlantic Canada devatated by the changes to EI and seasonal workers…. to Peter Van Loan’s riding and the need for migrant workers in the Holland Marsh… to all the Conservative ridings with aboriginal populations… those with huge Senior populations…. this budget is a disaster … the CON MP’s mute.
Have to say that the cult-like cheering and applause by the CON caucus every time the Prime Minister voted was truly worrying… I tweeted a concern that that this is a time of ‘Cabinet Auditions’ .. I asked if anyone could spot a PMO operative in the Government gallery … with an ‘applause meter’ and a notebook…. … it was truly sickening to watch …. The NPD were also worrying as always in their ‘triumphalism’ .. like last year on Election Day last year… they seem to be oblivious to the fact that there is now a CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY .. we lost every vote tonight… yet they were celebrating…. WHY ???
I am hugely proud that the Liberals led the fight tonight… tabled our amendments first… helped Elizabeth May with hers…. articulated to Canadians why they should be worried …. VERY worried. The consequences of this ideologically driven budget will be felt in the next months and years …Bad policy… begets bad results… thankfully tonight….Canadians are paying attention
