commitments to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health ....
- More than 500,000 women and adolescent girls die from pregnancy and
childbirth-related causes. 99% of these occur in the developing world.
- Recent research by the Guttmacher Institute and the United Nations
Population Fund (
UNFPA) makes a compelling case for greater international support
for sexual and reproductive health programs. The key findings of the
report are that maternal deaths in developing countries could be slashed
by 70% and newborn deaths cut nearly in half if the world doubled its
investment in family planning and pregnancy-related care. The bottom
line is that “investments in family planning boost the overall
effectiveness of every dollar spent on the provision of
pregnancy-related and newborn health care.”
